Odyssey - Our History

Our History

Odyssey is a ‘Charity exempt from registration’, registered as an Industrial and Provident Society.

The organisation was established in 1985 (initially as Wandsworth Homes Association) by a group of interested parties in the area.

Founders of Odyssey, who were supported by local Members of Parliament for Battersea and Tooting included:

  • Representatives from Wandsworth Borough Council
  • The Local Health Authority
  • Relatives of future users
  • The Community Health Council and
  • ‘Contact a Family’

The organisation’s first service opened for five people in Earlsfield Road (Wandsworth) in 1985. By 2002, Odyssey had developed a further 17 services. Since 2004 we have been through a period of significant growth; opening new services in Wandsworth, Southwark, Lewisham, Sutton, Merton and Croydon.

Odyssey now provides a total of over 40 registered and supported living services for adults with a learning disability. Odyssey is in the process of de-registering it's Registered Residential Services in favour of a Supported Living model.

We also offer community based and outreach services that fall under the name of 'Odyssey Options'. Odyssey has recently opened 'City Breaks' , providing a holiday respite service in Southwark. Our Registered Domiciliary Care department now offers even more individualised support, and our Learning and Development department recently became an Approved City and Guilds training centre for its LDQ workshops.
